The Faculty of Applied Science works with 17 partner institutions in Asia, Australia and Europe to match their courses to the UBC Applied Science curriculum. Our partner institutions are recognized internationally as academic leaders and were selected because their course offerings complement UBC Applied Science degree programs. 

Explore different partner institutions, read testimonials from past CIE students, investigate possible accommodation options at each destination, consider your budget in relation to the region you want to travel to, and see how the term dates will work with your program. 

Applied Science students also have the option to apply for other international experiences beyond the designated CIE partners. You can view the list of all other international experiences on the Go Global website.

  • City University of Hong Kong

    Term 1: Aug – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    Established in 1984, the City University of Hong Kong has just under 10,000 students, of which 35% are international. In 2018, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked it seventh in the “young university” category and 60th in terms of engineering and technology.

  • Delft University of Technology

    Term 1: Aug – Jan, Term 2: Feb – Jul

    Founded as an academy for civil engineering in 1842, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is the oldest public technical university in the Netherlands. TU Delft was ranked 20th in engineering and technology by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university has a wide range of research facilities unique to the Netherlands, including an aircraft simulator, wind tunnels, a chip facility, a high-voltage laboratory and a nuclear reactor.

  • École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne

    Term 1: Sep – Jan, Term 2: Feb – Jul

    Established in 1853, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is situated in the beautiful history-rich city of Lausanne within the French-speaking region of Switzerland. It is considered one of the world’s leading institutions for science, engineering and technology and was ranked 11th in engineering and technology by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. With over 350 laboratories and research groups on campus, EPFL is one of Europe’s most innovative and productive scientific institutions.

  • ETH Zurich

    Term 1: Sep – Jan, Term 2: Feb – Jun

    Founded in 1955, ETH Zurich is situated in the German-speaking region of Switzerland and is a sister university to EPFL. Zurich is considered the business capital of Switzerland and is the country’s largest city with almost one million people living in the metropolitan area. Home to many museums, theatres, art galleries and libraries (and just 30 kilometres from the Swiss Alps), it is one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe. More than 18,500 students from over 110 countries attend the school, which is one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences and was ranked ninth in the world for engineering and technology by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. ETH Zurich has produced 21 Nobel Laureates, including alumnus Albert Einstein.

  • Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

    Term 1: Sep – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has quickly positioned itself as one of the world’s foremost international research universities. In 2018, it was ranked 44th overall and 18th for engineering and technology in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and achieved second spot for young universities. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology prides itself on its vibrant research interdisciplinary culture, partnerships with industry and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Monash University

    Term 1: Jul – Nov, Term 2: Feb – Jun

    Established in 1958, Monash University’s Engineering Faculty is renowned worldwide for the quality of its teaching and strength in engineering research. A member of the prestigious Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia’s leading universities, Monash was ranked 45th in the world in Engineering and Technology by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2017.

  • Nanyang Technological University

    Term 1: Aug – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    Recognized as one of Asia’s top universities, the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has more than 30,000 students from 100 countries. In 2018, it was ranked 52nd in the world and 16th for engineering and technology by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Its College of Engineering is the fifth-most cited engineering faculty in the world.

  • National University of Singapore

    Term 1: Aug – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    The National University of Singapore is well known for research strengths in engineering and its strong connections with the country’s research institutes and centres. Consistently ranked as one of the world’s top universities, the National University of Singapore was the top university in Asia in 2018 and the eighth in the world in engineering and technology, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

  • Technical University of Denmark

    Term 1: Aug – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) was founded in 1829 by H.C. Ørsted, considered the father of electromagnetism. One of Europe’s leading technical universities, DTU is situated just north of Denmark’s capital of Copenhagen. DTU is home to over 10,000 students and 5,000 staff members, and its engineering school ranks second in the Nordic countries. The university was ranked 53rd in the world in engineering and technology by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

    DTU also offers The Arctic Semester at its Arctic Technology Centre in Sisimiut, Greenland. Students participating in this semester can experience the unique environment and challenges of extreme climate engineering north of the Arctic Circle.

  • Technical University of Munich

    Term 1: Oct – Feb, Term 2: Apr – Aug

    One of Europe’s top universities, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is committed to excellence in research, teaching and interdisciplinary education. The university has strong links with international companies and scientific institutions. TUM was one of the first universities in Germany to be named a University of Excellence and was ranked 28th by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. TUM’s 13 faculties provide an excellent environment for research and for the education of over 39,000 students, of which one-third are women. TUM is a technology-oriented university, with 13 departments focused on natural sciences, engineering sciences, life and food sciences and medicine.

  • University of Exeter

    Term 1: Sep – Jan, Term 2: Jan – Jun

    The University of Exeter is located in Exeter, Devon, in the United Kingdom. Exeter is home to over 23,000 students, and has maintained a top ten ranking in the annual ‘National Student Survey’ throughout the UK each year since 2005. With four campuses across Devon and Cornwall, this region boasts historic importance and cultural significance for England. The University of Exeter is also home to the world-class geoscience and mining department named the Camborne School of Mines.

  • University of Glasgow

    Term 1: Sep – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    Established in 1451, the University of Glasgow is one of the oldest universities in the world and one of the top-ranked universities in the United Kingdom, with an international reputation for research, teaching and international student satisfaction. This prestigious university is situated in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland and the third-largest city in the UK. With more than 25,000 students and 6,000 staff, the university is spread over a number of different campuses; its main Gilmorehill campus is in Hillhead, three kilometres from the city centre. The University of Glasgow was ranked 88th in the world by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

  • University of Hong Kong

    Term 1: Aug – Dec, Term 2: Jan – May

    The University of Hong Kong was founded in 1911, making it the oldest university in the city. In 2018, it was ranked 40th overall and 30th for engineering and technology in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This research-driven university boasts 111 professors who are ranked in the top percent of global scientists and has a vibrant community of 30,000 students from 104 countries.

  • University of Melbourne

    Term 1: Jul – Nov, Term 2: Feb – Jun

    Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is Australia’s second-oldest university. This leading research university was ranked 33rd in the world by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and has extensive links to industry and government partners in Australia.

  • University of New South Wales

    Term 1: Aug – Nov, Term 2: Feb – Jun

    Established in 1949, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is a world-class research university with a unique focus on scientific, technological and professional disciplines. UNSW’s main campus is located seven kilometres from the centre of Sydney, Australia’s most populous city. The university was ranked 78th in the world by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

  • University of Queensland

    Term 1: Jul – Nov, Term 2: Feb – Jun

    One of Australia’s leading research and teaching institutions, the University of Queensland was ranked 60th in the world by the 2017 Times Higher Education World University rankings. With one in every four students an international student, the multicultural student population offers exposure to a range of cultures and networks.

  • University of Sydney

    Term 1: Jul – Nov, Term 2: Mar – Jul

    Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is one of the world’s leading research and teaching universities: it is one of the top three in Australia and consistently ranks in the top one  percent in the world. With over 400 areas of study and over 200 clubs and societies, the university has something to offer all students.
