Third Quadrant Design

About the Team

As UBC’s first green building design team, we have the unique opportunity to enable students with the skills and hope needed to create change in the industry. Our female-founded team continues to be 60 percent female since our inaugural year, a notable statistic within UBC engineering design teams that are historically male-dominated.

Third-Quadrant Design was named after the negative portion of an energy-carbon coordinate plane, symbolizing our goal of net-negative energy and carbon design, or regenerative design.

In this capacity, we hope to bring together passionate students from various disciplines to learn about and act on our current climate crisis, while building real-world knowledge and hands-on skills. Our team has members from across 4 faculties in 10 sub-teams that work together to accomplish our team's goals.

Nature of Activity

  • External - Competition

Time Commitment

Our team competes in the US D.O.E. Solar Decathlon which involves submitting multiple deliverables from October to April. The average member commits 5 hours per week to research, develop, and draft designs for these submissions.

Application Deadlines

Generally, our team recruits from early to late September. Our business teams often recruit in January too.
